In the second half of the 19th century, Azerbaijan was undergoing a period of economic rise, transforming into one of the world’s centers of oil and industry. Significant changes were beginning to take place in the country’s socio-political and cultural life. The expansion of the enlightenment movement led to the emergence of the national press. It was in this context that, 150 years ago on July 22, 1875 the prominent intellectual, natural scientist, and publicist-educator Hasan bey Zardabi published the newspaper “Əkinçi” in the Azerbaijani language. This publication became the first example of the national press and marked a historic event in the life of the country.
At the same time, local capital markets also began to develop. The Baku Exchange, established in 1886, started playing a vital role in the country’s economic development. This period was characterized by economic transformation and large-scale infrastructure projects. One of the most significant projects was the Shollar Water Pipeline, which was built thanks to the initiative of the great philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, with the support of the Baku Exchange and the financial contributions of the national bourgeoisie.
On the eve of the 150th anniversary of the national press, the Baku Stock Exchange held a meeting with media representatives at the House Museum of H.Z. Taghiyev, a figure who made great contributions to Azerbaijan's economy and public enlightenment. The event began with a tour of the museum and concluded with a warm and sincere meeting between the management team of Baku Stock Exchange and the journalists. During the meeting, participants discussed the latest developments in the capital markets Azerbaijan, the latest activities of the Baku Stock Exchange, and the crucial role of journalists in promoting economic literacy among the public.
